| Brazil's First Deaf
culture and Arts Festival to take place in SO PAULO |
We are most pleased
to invite you to participate in or attend Brazil's
First Deaf Arts and Culture Festival, scheduled
for December 12, 13 and 14,
2003. The will include an arts exhibition, sale of art works, and performances
by Deaf dancers, actors and storytellers. It will be held in So Paulo,
Brazil's largest city, which has a population of 16 million and a vibrant
Deaf community.
By creating a forum for Deaf artists, we intend to increase pride within
the Deaf community, gain recognition for Deaf artists, and work towards
the
inclusion of Deaf people in society.
Deaf actors, film makers, storytellers, writers, dancers, and artists
are all encouraged to be involved, as are theatre and dance troupes with
at
least one Deaf member.
Please try to send your project by September 30, 2003 by e-mail to ilsb@lsbvideo.com.br,
or to ILSB, Largo So Francisco de Paula 26/1221
Centro, Rio de Janeiro RJ 20051-070, Brazil.
Projects will be selected by a team made up of education, art and culture
professionals.
The event will be open to the general public. Participants must cover
their own travel to Brazil. While the event cannot help with housing
and food
costs, hotels and restaurants are not expensive. Also, booths will be
made available to the artists, and you will have an opportunity to display
and
sell your work.

| Disability Living
Allowance |
Brothers and Sisters
Club New Office! |
| We have been
informed that the Government will change the law
in January for those entitled to Disability Living
Allowance - the law state that those with HIV status
will be recognised disability automatically with
no questions asked by the DLA office. Currently,
those with HIV status are asked with a lot of questions
relating to their health but in January, it is
going to be the good news for people with HIV.
We are very pleased for our Deaf customers due
to their stress level going up and down in the
past but hopefully, they will have a comfortable
life starting from January. |
We are pleased
to announce that we are working with the City of
Westminster Council on providing us a room to allow
us to carry on working for you all. A decision
is awaiting from them. We will update you all via
e-mail as soon as we receive their response. |
| New York Walk through
Manhatten |
Health Issue |
| We are happy
to support two of our committees John Bown and
Marcus Turley to go on a trip to the United States
of America supporting New York Walk organised by
Stonewall. New York Walk is aimed at Stonewall's
fundraising New York Equality Walk. John Bown explained
that he hopes that his work company will be able
to fund his trip to New York. We are waiting for
more news from him and as for Marcus Turley, he
is still waiting for a reply from his local borough.
Good Luck to both of them! |
We are pleased
to announce that we will be adding an extra title
for our MENU bar on our website - HEALTH ISSUE
- This section will allow you to understand the
definition of HIV and all of that. It will be launched
in the coming weeks. Maybe, online video viewing
in BSL be launched in this section depending how
much time is needed. We will let you know in our
next newsletter in October. |
| Freedom Pass and
Freedom Oyster Card |
Email us? |
| We
have received a lot of enquiries in relation
to the Freedom Pass from our London's customers
through Info@brothers-and-sisters-club.com and
what we have done was to forward our concerns
to the GLA (Greater London Authority) on their
behalf. We got a speedy response from Ken Livingstone
the Mayor of London. He explained that the current
Freedom Passess expire in March 2004. When the
replacements are issued next year they will be
on Oyster cards (smartcards). Users will then
simply have to touch the cards against the readers
on buses or on the Underground gates. The cards
will not need to be taken out of their wallet.
When a valid Oyster card is presented to the
Underground gate the light on the reader turns
green and the gate opens. But when a magmetic
ticket (such as a Freedom Pass) is put through
the gate the light on the Oyster card reader
does, turn red! Oyster Card is an advanced system
to prevent the boroughs from spending millions
on replacing current stolen or lost freedom pass
because Oyster Card is like a bank card whereby
it can be blocked automatically when report stolen! |
Due to a lot
of positive feedback received from our customers
and the managers at the Sols Arms has agreed to
allow us to use the upstair room until January
2004 and we will review our customer's feedback
in January and a decision will be made by ourselves.
Thank you to you all for your support and kindness.
That is all for now for this month!
