About us
This website is a part of our project, which was funded by the
Jack Ashley Millennium Awards, under the NDCS.
Our project is about accommodation for deaf elderly people.
We were frustrated about the level of service for elderly deaf
people from our own personal experiences from friends and relatives
so we decided to get evidence and to show how the standard of
service in homes could be improved in the UK. We visited 3 homes
in the UK and interviews the residents for information and their
views. We also went to Sweden, where they have plans to set
up a deaf elderly home in Stockholm in 2005 and gathered information
on their project.
Generally the findings of our project show that there is a definite
need to set up a good effective home for the deaf elderly in
the U.K. We hope our project will make the public and social
services and deaf organisations realise the importance of a
deaf elderly home in the UK and to campaign to make this dream
a reality as soon as possible.
We filmed all the response from both the UK and Sweden and this
is all in a video, which we hope will make the public aware
of what people's views on this topic is. The video can be viewed
at the NDCS office in London. The video is actually a brief
visual backup for our report; which is available in print format
on this website so you can print it out to read on our recommendations
and to get information about Sweden's project, and how we can
learn from them. We also gave presentations to social workers
and deaf organizations in Northern Ireland and in Manchester
at the Social Services department during their regular SWAG
meetings with social workers from different regions in the U.K.
We have posted copies of our report and videos to several elderly
organizations in our aim to raise awareness of the gap in services
for the deaf.
If you wish to contribute your findings/your views and/or opinions,
perhaps you have been through a similar experience and have
tips how to solve this problem or know a good place some elderly
deaf people should go then please do leave a message on the
message board for other people who see this website to share
information and to help each other.
We hope you enjoy reading about our project.
Thank you,
Shana Grummitt and Janet Young. |
